Container Summary

Contains 2 ALS w/ envelopes from James Placidus to his son James Cresap Ord. Written from Omaha, Nebraska, to James first at Fort D.A. Russell, Wisconsin, and then at Fort Stockton, Texas. @ Letter of 2/7/1874: "My Dear Son - I wrote you about four days ago wherein was set forth some of the considerations objectionable to your forming a matrimonial alliance so soon after your initiation in military life..." Continues with advice against marriage at such an early age. @ Letter of 4/27/1874. Conveys news of the death of "another child of your uncle the general. He had been sick for a long time with intermittant fever..." [Possibly the child named Grant.] Also sends news of Pacificus' new wife: "The Judge Ord, your uncle, and his bride have been here on their return to New York City. They remained over a week this time at the Omaha Hotel. Mrs. Judge O. did not like San Francisco much on account of the cool reception she received from the Judge's relatives, particularly from your Aunt Georgiana Holladay - of whom she complained bitterly - what it is all about I don't know, and didn't care to learn..." Finally, refers also to "Bud" (also called "Buddy"), Pacificus' son Joseph Pacificus, "who remains in San Francisco in a law office studying that profession as the Judge his father desires..."
