Edward O.C. Ord] at Genl. Butler's [Benjamin Franklin Butler?] former headquarters where Genl. Ord still holds command of this department. All are quiet within our lines of operations - while we were at Fort Monroe however the Rebel gun boats on the James River undertook to pass down in front of our lines and over our obstructions in the river. The smaller and light draft boat passed over clear, but finding the others could not follow returned, not however before one was blown up by a shell from our batteries...very little damage was done to our troope - what their next move will be remains to be seen." @ Letter of 4/11/1865: "Your Uncle the Genl. is not yet arrived from the front where he has been to catch Genl. R.E. Lee's fleeing army from Richmond going towards Lynchburg which he has effectually succeeded in assisting to do.
