Container Summary

Contains ALS from James Ord to his son. Written from Santa Cruz to Sault St. Marie. Conveying more family news and news of farm life in California: "It is Harvest time and Marcellus and John are very busy. John has cut all his barley, the oats are partly so, next week he will begin to cut the wheat...the barley is also very good; our potatoes and beans look well, and melons of different kinds are very promising..." @ Also refers to Robert Brent Ord and the progress of the Gold Rush: "he says he is very busy and says that the times are very hard with him that he cannot sell any of his cattle as the miners have left his neighborhood for Frozen River mines and the rush to the mines in the British possessions is beyond precedent."
