Container Summary
Contains ALS from Edward writing from near Wheeling, Virginia. Expresses concerns about various rumours and gossip about him: "My dear Brother - I find that the news paper rumor (started by someone desirous of injuring me) that I am mustered out of service, is not true - and should I deserve it I presume I may be put on duty again." Continues: "Now for a word of advice in a domestic matter - My enemies have made much use of the fact that my wife is a secessionist and related to their officers she could not resist the temptation of associating with those of similar ideas - and - all I could say only made her the more persistent - so that I concluded if I was to be bandied about subordinate places on account of my connection with secessionists I had better resign at once for my usefulness was marred if not destroyed by my unfortunate connection. I have had this fact of my wife's family politics thrown in my teeth by generals' wives... and there is no doubt of it that unless a man is peculiarly constituted his wife's influence is of great importance to him in his political relations. Should your wife still have her seccession[ist] views, you had better at once quit the service and go into private business for yourself, for her politics will become known more rapidly than if she had the small pox - and officers will avoid having you with them for fear it will operate to their disadvantage - it is melancholy that this is so but it is true..."
