Container Summary

Contains ALS from Edward O.C. Ord writing from Washington, DC, to his brother J. Placidus yet in Sault St. Marie, Michigan: "My Dear Brother - A happy New Year to you - you see I am back - wife, family, etc., etc., etc., etc. I have 3 little ones - one 2 years, one 1 year, and one a month and half old - lots of crying at home..." Continues with news of the parents now residing in Santa Cruz on a farm looked after by John Stephen. Promises Placy that he will endeavour to find "a situation under government on the Pacific...but I can only promise to try...I think it possible I can do a favor to the delegates from both Washington and Oregon Territory and if so shall try and get a place for you through their influence or that of Doct. Gwin [William McKendree Gwin 1805-1885, California senator]." @ Also goes on with description of his travels: "I visited Washington Territory...and the country East of the Cascades is very pleasant in the fall and soil etc. very attractive."
