Container Summary

Contains ALS to James Placidus Ord from his brother on board the steamer "Gaston." Describes his adventures en route to his new post, Fort Dallas "near Key Biscayne" [Biscayne Bay?] in Florida: " I enclose you a paper which will partially explain my not having written for some time. This accident or wreck as some of us call it, was quite a dangerous affair. We were on a dangerous part of a rough coast in a bad season in a little broken down river steam boat, with the sea roaring on one side and savages wailing on the other...just as we reached Cape Canaveral, a squall rose astern and carried us around in fine style. We were five days coming about 35 [?] miles to this place where we have been waiting for 10 days for another boat."
