Container Summary

Contains correspondence (in French) exchanged between Patrick McLaughlin and colleagues concerning the establishment of the seminary/community for liturgical studies (cf. folder 1:21 on the same subject). @ Bugnot, Rene to McLaughlin - TLS, 6/30/76. A thank you note to the latter for hosting a visit to Rome by Bugnot and his contemporaries (probably the young men who hoped to study and be ordained at the proposed seminary). Refers to missing a visit with "Monseigneur J.," probably Fr. James, who resided in Naples at the time, running the John Henry Newman College. @ Bugnot to McLaughlin - TLS xerox, 9/1/76. Bugnot expresses concern that he may not be ordained priest if he pursues the project for the new seminary. He explains that being short of cash, he needs confirmation that he will be ordained before further committing himself to the project by undertaking a journey to Leeds to discuss it with Bishop Wheeler in Leeds. @ Bugnot to McLaughlin - TLS xerox, 9/4/76. Bugnot writes, apparently in response to McLaughlin's opposition to the seminary being established in the U.S.A. Additionally, Bugnot expresses dissatisfaction that McLaughlin has proceeded with measures without consulting the group, i.e. requesting audience with Bishop Wheeler in Leeds to discuss the project. Unable, as a group to concur with McLaughlin, Bugnot and his colleagues therefore express regret that the project cannot be continued as planned with McLaughlin. @ McLaughlin to Bugnot - TL carbon (in reply to Bugnot's letter of 9/4/76), dated 10/29/76, 3 pp. McLoughlin expresses regret, but reminds Bugnot that neither is he the "leader" of the project nor an opponent to the proposed seminary in America. In general, McLaughlin's letter attempts to clarify his motives in assisting the young aspirants with their project. He concludes with the hope that he will remain in touch with Bugnot. @ "Jean-Marie" (colleague of Rene Bugnot) to McLaughlin - ALS xerox, 11/19/76, 2 pp. Replies on behalf of an absent Bugnot who is away on retreat and whose mail his friend has opened in case of an emergency. Does not express much other than providing news that Bugnot is away. @ McLaughlin to Bernard Jacqueline (secretary of "non-believers" at the Vatican) - TL carbon, 11/26/76. In which McLaughlin expresses grief over the situation with Bugnot and the group. @ Jacqueline to McLaughlin - TLS xerox in reply, 12/4/76. Offers suggestion to McLaughlin that he contact the Abbe Marcel Lelegard who founded a seminary in La Lucerne d'Outre mer similar to the one proposed by Rene Bugnot and his group. The main dilemma is the ordination of the group, therefore Jacqueline proposes that McLaughlin continue to aid Bugnot by consulting Lelegard on the subject. @ McLaughlin to Msgr. Aure Baron - TL carbon, 11/26/76, 2 pp. Relates the situation with Bugnot and the group. @ Baron, Aure to McLaughlin - ALS xerox, 12/2/76. Reply to above letter.
