Container Summary
Contains ALS from John Smythe Richardson (1828-1894) from Charleston: "Without any personal acquaintance, I have taken the liberty of directing a commission to you...in order to procure the examination of Mr. Joseph Planta [sp?] one of his Majesty's under Secretaries of State , & any other persons, upon questions set forth in the commission." Richardson was a U.S. congressman and lawyer. He was a member of the House of Representatives for South Carolina, 1865-67 and 1879-83 (as Democrat). He was also an agent for the State of South Carolina to apply for and receive land script donated by South Carolina to Congress in 1866. He was a delegate at the National Democratic Convention, St. Louis, 1876.
