Content Description

Correspondence, financial records, daybooks, ledgers, clippings and photographs pertaining to the Tilghman family of Eastern Shore, Maryland. References to noted members of the family, including Colonel Richard Tilghman and Matthew Tilghman, occur among the records. Also contained in the papers is a journal kept by Stedman R. Tilghman, describing his travels through the West in 1843, including detailed accounts of Indian culture and language.

Richard Tilghman [2nd], 1672-1738; Richard Tilghman [3rd], 1705-1768; Richard Tilghman [4th], 1739-1810; Edward Tilghman, 1750-1815; Dr. Stedman R. Tilghman, d. 1848. Provenance prior to coming to Georgetown is unclear; possibly placed in the university archives prior to 1970.
