Identifier: GTA-000939

Content Description

This collection documents the relationship between Pope Pius XII and Georgetown University, starting with his visit to campus in the fall of 1936 as Cardinal Pacelli, when he received an honorary degree. Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets regarding the Cardinal and figures including Georgetown President Fr. Arthur A. O’Leary S.J. and papal duchess Genevieve Brady are among other assorted documents surrounding the Pope’s time on the Hilltop and in the United States as a whole. Additionally, this collection briefly details Cardinal Pacelli’s transition to Pope Pius XII, the decades of his papal tenure, and his death. A number of newspaper and magazine articles are present, offering insight into the public opinion of Pope Pius XII over the years, with brief records of correspondence dispersed throughout. The collection concludes with an eulogy on the passing of Pope Pius XII, delivered by Fr. O’Leary S.J. in October 1958.

Biographical / Historical

Pope Pius XII was born Eugenio Pacelli in Rome, Italy, on March 2nd, 1876. He was ordained a priest in 1901 and, at the end of 1929, appointed a Cardinal by Pope Pius XI. During his time serving as a Cardinal-Priest, he traveled throughout the world on papal missions, including a visit to the United States—and Georgetown University—in the fall of 1936.

Three years later, he was elected as the successor of Pope Pius XI after his death in 1939. The nearly twenty years of his papacy between 1939 to his death in 1958 was marked with the strife of World War II and the Holocaust, as well as its aftermath. Pope Pius XII’s conflicting and often withdrawn policies and views relating to the politics of the war remain a subject of controversy.
