Georgetown University Library: Miniatures Commemorating the Tercentenary of its Founding [1640-1940]
Scope and Contents
"Miniatures" was a limited edition publication of two hundred numbered copies. This collection includes copies numbered 2, 4, 29, and 144. The cover bears embossed seals of Georgetown University and the Riggs Family. Included are a foreword by Charles J. Foley, S.J., and sections on: "Manuscripts in the Riggs Memorial Library"; "Incunabula in the Riggs Memorial Library"; "The Riggs Memorial Library and Early Americana"; and "The Library and Its Work Today."
The selection of 1640 as a founding date for the Georgetown University Library appears to be linked to a claim in an article in the December 1939 issue of "Catholic Library World" written by Father Wilfrid Parson, S.J., who was Georgetown Librarian from 1937 to 1940 and again from 1950 to 1951. This article, titled “Notes on the History of the Georgetown Library”, states: "The origins of the Georgetown library go back literally to the little school which was conducted by Brother Ralph Crouch, S.J., at Calverton Manor, Md., from 1640 to 1659."
