Incoming Correspondence, 1888-1898 (Boxes 9-10)

 Series

Scope and Contents

Present are letters written to Father J. Havens Richards. These are arranged in two sequences, one organized chronologically, the other by sender.

Researchers who are looking for letters from specific correspondents in the chronological sequence are advised to work from the alphabetical name indexes to the letterpress books which hold copies of Father Richards’ replies. These indexes will supply the dates of Father Richards’ responses and these dates can then be used to look for the letters he was replying to in the folders of incoming correspondence. Researchers should also be aware that letters written to Father Richards in his capacity as Georgetown University President will be found in other groups of records held in the Georgetown University Archives. Archivists prior to 1971 often filed incoming materials by subject. As a result, for example, letters to Father Richards from John Vinton and Elizabeth Drexel Dahlgren will be found in records relating to Dahlgren Chapel. Please ask University Archives staff for assistance in locating additional correspondence to Father Richards on specific subjects.
