Scope and Contents
Joseph Stone paid the College using funds he acquired by hiring his enslaved man Charles out to William Nevitt.Mainly student accounts. Included are accounts for "Ladys Academy [Visitation?], Navy Yard House, and Trinity Church. A handwritten index has been added. Contains references to the presence of enslaved persons on campus, including the 1808 purchase of an unnamed enslaved woman from St. Inigoes for $240 by Father Francis Neale "for the use of College"; the purchase of "1 Negro Woman" from Georgetown College for $220 by Philip Bussard, a Presbyterian living in Georgetown, on July 6, 1810; the hiring out by the College of an enslaved man named George to a cobbler, Thomas Hyde, for twenty months; fees for the attendance of servants in the accounts of Elisha Harrison and John Bridges; payments by Joseph Stone to the College using funds generated by hiring Charles, his enslaved man, to William Nevitt; and the sale by Jeremiah Neale of his "Negro Man named Isaac" to Georgetown College to cover expenses for his son, James.
