Container Summary

Presented by the Alumni Association. The conclusion of the sermon from the Baccalaureate mass held in McDonough Gymnasium, Sunday, June 7, 1953, preached by Andrew J. Cooney, S.J. (C 1933) is followed by two specially recorded Glee Club and Band selections at the 4 minute, 28 second mark. The Glee Club sings the Alumni Song and the Band plays the Alma Mater. After the Alma Mater has finished, a description by an unidentified narrator of the commencement ceremony held on Monday, June 8, 1953, begins. A portion of the address by President Edward B. Bunn, S.J., starts at the 11 minutes, 57 second mark. He is followed by Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Brian A. McGrath, S.J., reading the Charter, the presentation of the Medal of Merit to Charles M. Williams, C 1934, and the reading of honorary degrees citations for Carlton Hayes, Francis C. Nash, and Frederick B. Sitterding, Jr. Assistant Secretary of Defense Francis Nash begins his address at the 23 minute, 56 second mark. Archbishop Patrick A. O'Boyle follows Mr. Nash and delivers his blessing. The recording ends with the Glee Club singing Forward Sons of Georgetown and the Band playing Hail Hoya Men. Note on tape says: "MASTER TAPE FOR ALUMNI GRADUATION RECORD JUNE 7-8, 1953"
