Scope and Contents
The John Early, S.J. Papers include correspondence to and from Fr. Early, a diary of events at Georgetown College from 1870 to 1872, academic and theological notes and notebooks, and printed material. In addition to material relating to Georgetown College, materials relating to Loyola College in Baltimore are present. A great deal of the information in the Georgetown University Archives relating to the impact of the Civil War on Georgetown College is to be found in the correspondence folders within the papers.

Container Summary
Includes leather-bound notebook belonging to Fr. Early with hand copied excerpts from or notes about histories or speeches: including James Prior's Life of Edmund Burke; Antione De Solis' Life of Cortes; history of the discovery of America by Henri Ternaux-Compans; history of Santa Cruz by Gandara; history of American by Hans Staden; Oliver Goldsmith's Life of Thomas Parnell; Burke's speeches; Phllip's speeches; and Curran's speeches. These may, at least in part, pre-date Fr. Early's arrival in the U.S. - see note at the top of a page about a quarter of the way through which reads "John Early, Maguire's Bridge, Fermanagh Ireland." Also present unbound notes on topics such as "Prejudices of Early Education", geology,and "On the Metrical Art."
