Biographical Note

Publisher, editor, and author (Walter) Newman Flower was born in Fontmell Magna, Dorset on July 8, 1879, the son of John Walter Flower. In 1903, Flower married Evelyn Readwin. He was educated at Weymouth College and privately. In 1906, he joined Cassell publishing house, and in 1927 he bought Cassell & Company Limited. While in charge of Cassell, he published Winston Churchill's "The Second World War." Churchill had said that he wanted his writings about World War II to be published only by Cassell. Flower's own publications include "Red Harvest" (1913), "Crucifixion" (1916), "George Frederic Handel" (1923), "Sir Arthur Sullivan: His Life and Letters" (1927), and "Franz Schubert" (1928). Flower also edited Arnold Bennett's "Journal." Flower was knighted in 1938. He was the father of Desmond Flower, also an important publisher. Sir Newman Flower died on March 12, 1964.
