Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Series I contains the working files of John Long from the meetings of Vatican II, the subsequent meetings of the SPCU during Long's time as a staff member, and Long's files after his retirement in 1980 as he continued to serve the Secretariat as a consultor. The series has been divided further into three sub-series: sub-series A including Long's files related to his work in the Second Vatican Council; sub-series B including his files documenting internal meetings of the SPCU from his time as a staff member and as a consultant (1966-2005); sub-series C, comprised of subject files regarding topics common to the various ecumenical dialogues that the SPCU was engaged in.

The Secretariat for Promoting Chritian Unity (SPCU) was established in June, 1960 by Pope John XXIII as a preparatory commission for the planned Second Vatican Council. From 1961-1965, the SPCU served as the drafting body for several of the documents presented at Vatican II: the declarations regarding ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegratio), non-Christian religions (Nostra Aetate), religious liberty (Dignitatis Humanae), and divine revelation (Dei Verbum), as well as serving as host to non-Catholic observers invited to the proceedings. After the conclusion of the Council the SPCU was confirmed as a permanent office of the Holy See by Paul VI, and was renamed the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity by John Paul II in 1988.
